another priceless conversation
While at the gym tonight, I was watching Locked Up (a great show about prisons/inmates on MSNBC). I began laughing uncontrollably when I heard this conversation:
booking clerk: Are you on any medications?
inmate: Crack cocaine. And prozac. That's for depression, you know.

Perspective
Today, I got to hang out with a certain 5 year old that I seriously love. We were talking a walk to the park with my dog, and on the way home, started talking about how hungry we were....
Mycah: I'm starving!
Me: Me too! We'll cook dinner when we get back.
Mycah: Actually, people who are starving are dying because they don't have any food. So we are just really hungry.
She's a smart one, that Mycah Rae!

Total Confusion
Today was just like any other - except for the baby shower after school I forgot about. And also forgot to buy a gift for. I decided make a Wal-Mart run during lunch, figuring I had about 45 minutes to get there, figure out something to buy, and get back to school before kids started filing into my room. On the way back to school, I realized I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do with the kids who would be walking into my room in 10 minutes. I got back to school, threw something together, and walked into the hallway to greet my 5th graders. As I entered the hallway, 2 of my kids walked by with their violins. I looked at them strangly, and asked them where they were going (they were walking past my room). Maria looked at me and replied "to strings." I asked them WHY they were going to strings - it was time for them to come to me for reading. Louie (who looked really confused at this point) stopped and said "but Miss Miles. It's WEDNESDAY. We don't HAVE reading today." To which I replied a defeated "oh. that's right."

Takin' It Step by Step
If you're lucky, this will be my last NKOTB entry...for awhile. I've been trying to think of ways to recap the night, and without being there, it's almost impossible. I've come up with a few, though...
1: Donnie Wahlberg STILL has the right stuff. I'm just sayin....
2: I've never screamed over boys like that. Ever.
3. BEST CONCERT of my LIFE. Seriously.
4. Doing an NKOTB song for a talent show my senior year of college DEFINITELY paid off when it came to Hangin' Tough. I did all the dances right along with them.
5. A woman sitting behind us asked me "so how old were you when they came out?" She was definitely MUCH older than me...so think twice about making fun of me now.
6. I bought the new cd. And LOVE it.
7. Need I say more?

Hangin' Tough:
I was the recipient of much flack today at work about going to the NKOTB show last night. Let me assure you, internet world:
I'm unashamed. Completely.
More to come :-)

Zach and Lia
Twice a month, I get to babysit two of my favorite kids. Tonight is one of those nights. I never walk away from these nights without something new to laugh at, and tonight proved to be no different.
Lia: C'mon Becky, we've got to get more stuff.
me: (while looking at a cd cover) Okay, let's go.
Lia: Uhhh, Becky? Are you coming?
******
We were playing with a pretend cell phone (that actually mysteriously rang as I was holding it...), and I answered the phone, pretending it was a girl from Zach's class. He took the phone, hung it up, and threw it on the floor, while pretending to throw a bomb on it. The phone rang again, and this time, Lia answered it.
Lia: Hello? Hello? OH NO!!!!!!!!! SHE'S DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It Might Be Hope
You do your work the best that you can
you put one foot in front of the other
life comes in waves and makes it's demands
you hold on as well as your able
You've been here for a long long time
Hope has a way of turning it's face to you
just when you least expect it
you walk in a room
you look out a window
and something there leaves you breathless
you say to yourself
it's been a while since I felt this
but it feels like it might be hope
It's hard to recall what blew out the flame
it's been dark since you can remember
you talk it all through to find it a name
as days go on by without number
You've been here for a long long time
Hope has a way of turning it's face to you
just when you least expect it
you walk in a room
you look out a window
and something there leaves you breathless
you say to yourself
it's been a while since I felt this
but it feels like it might be hope
